- Radiation-resistant cell lines exhibited upregulation and increased activation of Axl, PI3 kinase signalling as well as increased expression of PD-L1. In 3 cohorts of HPV-negative head and neck squamous cell carcinoma patient samples evaluated with different methods [reverse phase protein array (N=68), mRNA expression array (N=97) or immunohistochemistry (N=114), respectively], increased expression of PD-L1 was also correlated with local failure following radiotherapy as compared to the PD-L1–low expression group (P = 0.01, 1.9 × 10−3, and 9 × 10−4, respectively).
